The Portable Acoustic Modification Laboratory (PAML) is the collaborative sound installation team of Jonathon Kirk and Lee Weisert. They are composers who have long been interested in the connections between sound, natural processes and unpredictable materials. Their projects employ novel technological frameworks to expose hidden sound sources and musical structures latent in a range of environmental phenomena.
PAML has presented their work at festivals, galleries and venues across the country. They have recently presented their work at the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC), the International Conference for New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) and 2014 TEDx conference at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Their projects have been supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, Center for Interdisciplinary Research in the Arts, the Illinois Arts Council, the UNC Performing Arts Special Activities Fund, and the North Central College FPDC Fund.
